Pass / Fail Grading

Ø      Grading criteria in Physical Education is not the same as the classroom setting where assignments and test scores are objective evaluative methods.

Ø      The quality of a student’s active participation and effort are basic to the process of evaluation in Physical Education.

Ø      The main purpose of grading in Physical Education is to evaluate a student’s level of participation. The evaluative process, therefore, should be on participation and effort rather than skill level.

Ø      We believe that all students can learn, however, not all possess the same performance capabilities. Therefore, we use a grading procedure which reflects this and awards students for their participation and effort.

Ø      A change from the traditional letter grade to a process of pass or fail in Physical Education reduces the sensitivity of self image and peer analysis.

Ø      We want our students to know that the control of their lifestyle is their responsibility and that active participation in Physical Education will better prepare them for a healthier life.
