Why Make a Web Site?

Advantages

Disadvantages

Words to Know

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) - The graphics format often used for web page images.
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) - the language used to format Web documents.
Internet A global network of computers that allows millions of users to exchange and share information.
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) - a graphic format used for photographs commonly found on the WWW.
Link A hypertext connection to another web site.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)- A fancy name for an address or location of a web page.(i.e. www.ahsd.org)
Web browser Software which allows users to access and browse the World Wide Web. (Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator.)
WWW ( World Wide Web) A part of the internet highlighted by millions of hypertext documents.
Web site A collection of web pages on the WWW centered around a particular theme.

Tip: Create a special file on your computer's hard drive just for graphics.  Whenever you surf the internet and see a background, icon, picture, bullet, or any other graphic item, BORROW IT!  Simply right click (or click and hold) your mouse on that image, highlight and click "save image as", and direct it to your graphics file.  After a while you will build up quite a library of images that you can use in your website.  There are also a ton of sites that specialize in downloadable images just for website construction. We will look at these latter.
